HOLLYWOOD, FL - September 6, 2005 - VISTA today announced its award of $27,500 in community grants to five area nonprofit organizations. Recipients of the first ever VISTA Community Grants are the American Lung Association of Florida, Camillus House, Covenant House Florida, SOS Children's Villages-Florida and S.W.I.M.S. Foundation. The local charitable organizations were among 20 applying for VISTA Community Grants. "We are fortunate to have the expertise and types of resources offered by the nonprofit community," said Dr. Michael Hogan, chief operating officer for VISTA. "These organizations are providing a vast amount of needed high quality services to families and individuals - newborns through adults - who would otherwise have nowhere else to turn." The VISTA Community Grants Program supports charitable organizations whose work, through measurable outcomes, contributes to improving the health of the community in service areas where VISTA employees live and work. "VISTA's support will help us provide for the special health services and health education needs of our abused, abandoned and severely neglected foster children," said Marjory Bruszer, executive director of SOS Children's Villages-Florida. "We are grateful and encouraged by VISTA's recognition of our organization and its mission." The SOS Children's Villages-Florida (SOS) in Coconut Creek provides stable homes in a nurturing family environment for up to 60 foster children ages 2-17 years old. Siblings are often reunited at SOS, further enhancing the family experience. The village cul-de-sac includes 11 family homes and a community center. The VISTA Community Grants will be used to fund the following initiatives: American Lung Association of Florida - Lung Mobile Program; an anti tobacco and drug abuse education program targeting 4th- 12th grade children. (Palm Beach County) Camillus House - Adult primary medical care, HIV/AIDS, infectious diseases and behavioral health services for the homeless. (Miami-Dade County) Covenant House Florida - Health care services that address the underlying health problems of homeless children. (Broward County) SOS Children's Villages-Florida - Health services program for abused, abandoned and severely neglected children in foster care residing in the Villages' homes. (Broward County) S.W.I.M.S. Foundation - Water safety instruction and swim lessons for underprivileged at risk minority children. (Broward County) A final round of grants for this year will be awarded by October 31st. Applications are available online at www.vistahealthplan.com or by calling 1-800-447-5116 ext. 3360. To print an application from VISTA's website click on "Our Company" and select "Community Relations" from the drop down menu. Nonprofit organizations whose service area includes one or more of the following counties are invited to apply: Alachua, Broward, Escambia, Leon, Marion, Martin, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach or St. Lucie. Applications are being accepted through September 30th. The grant program is one initiative in a multi-component community relations program that VISTA introduced in July. Additional initiatives include a volunteer program for senior executives; an employee sponsored community activities committee; the ViSTARS employee volunteer program and the VISTA Volunteer Fair, an onsite event to inspire employee volunteerism by providing nonprofit organizations the opportunity to recruit volunteers from VISTA's workforce of 1,000 employees. Together these programs provide outreach and assistance to the community
